Diode Pumped Solid State Lasers (DPSS) – Doubled, Tripled and Quadrupled YAG
(532 nm, 355 nm & 266 nm) Systems
Second harmonic generation of a Nd:YAG laser results in light output at 532 nm wavelength, in the “green” portion of the visible spectrum. Because many materials are transparent at 532 nm, it is a good wavelength for processing thin films on glass or polymers as there is no damage to the underlying substrate. Green light also couples quite well with some metals, notably copper.
Third harmonic generation results in light output at 355 nm wavelength – in the UV. This is a good all-around UV wavelength that couples well with many materials including metals, ceramics and dielectrics. It is reasonably gentle on the optics and does not require extraordinary safety concerns. Commercial lasers are available from a couple watts up to 50 W output.
Fourth harmonic generation results in light output at 266 nm wavelength (also in the UV). This wavelength couples even better than 355 nm, but these lasers are commercially available with only a few watts output and the optics tend to degrade faster, so they require somewhat more care than 355 nm lasers.
